What a special day the Leicestershire and Rutland Badger Group had yesterday, celebrating David Attenborough’s 100th birthday at the Attenborough Arboretum. 🦡
Thank you to Zach, Lynne, Caroline, and Sue for helping to run the stall. An added special feature was Caroline’s handmade pottery, which she was giving away in exchange for a comment about the role badgers play in preserving the environment. Please follow @haveahearrandpassiton on Instagram to see the comments.
We had some useful conversations with people who visited our stall while discussing the end of the badger cull in March 2026, and the further difficulties badgers face due to increased housing development in green areas. One result of this is the increase in badgers visiting our gardens in search of food and places to build their setts.
We highlighted the important role badgers play within our ecosystem as eco-engineers, and dispelled myths about their role in the decline of species such as ground-nesting birds, bees, and hedgehogs.
It was also very special to receive a visit from Peter and Pam Mynott, the founders and longest-standing members of the group.
